How does Erection Take Place?
The penis is made up of three erectile bodies: two so-called cavernous bodies and a spongy body. The two cavernous bodies are large cylinder-shaped reservoirs, they contain veins and arteries. The corpus spongiosum contains the urethra, through which urine and semen can flow.
Most of the time, the corpora cavernosa are poor in blood and the volume of the penis is small. During an excitation, sensory signals reach the brain. The erection centers send orders that pass through the spinal cord to the penis through the erector nerves . These nerves are directly connected to the arteries and the corpora cavernosa of the penis. Result: the arteries dilate, the spongy tissues fill with blood and the penis gradually becomes erect.

The Penile Prosthesis - the Last Option
For some men, it is no longer possible to have natural erections after cancer, diabetes or following trauma. It is then possible to implant a penile prosthesis in the penis. It is a heavy, irreversible surgical procedure and proposed as a last resort to allow these men to regain an erection.
The penile prosthesis represents the last resort (approximately 750 interventions per year in France). But accepted if it is proposed from the outset, the patients put all their hopes in the surgical treatment, after having tested other therapies without success.
